Early Support When It Matters Most
At Haywards Farm School, we collaborate with the Thames Valley Police and Children’s Services to identify and support pupils who have experienced domestic violence in their households.
This initiative, known as Operation Encompass, aims to safeguard and assist children and young people who have witnessed or been involved in domestic abuse incidents. By sharing relevant information with local schools, we enable designated safeguarding leads to engage with affected children and provide necessary support within a safe and familiar environment.
Domestic abuse can have profound effects on children, both in the short-term and long term.

Remember that addressing domestic violence requires a multifaceted approach involving education, awareness and community support.
On receipt of any information, the DSL will decide on the appropriate support the child requires.
We will record this information and store this information in line with our Safeguarding Policy.

Immediate and Permanent Physical Harm:
Children living in situations of family violence can suffer immediate and permanent physical harm, including accidental injuries or injuries resulting from their attempts to intervene during incidents. In extreme cases, domestic violence can even lead to death.
Emotional and Behavioral Impact:
Witnessing domestic violence or being victims of abuse themselves can result in short-term emotional distress and behavioral problems. Children may experience fear, anxiety, and confusion due to the violence they witness.
Long-Term Consequences:
The effects of domestic violence can extend into adulthood. Children who grow up in violent households may struggle with mental health issues, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety. They may also exhibit aggressive behaviour or have difficulty forming healthy relationships later in life.
Risk of Becoming Perpetrators:
Children who witness violence between parents may be at greater risk of perpetuating violence in their own future relationships. Breaking this cycle is crucial for preventing intergenerational transmission of abuse.
Support and Intervention:
Initiatives like Operation Encompass, which involves collaboration between police and schools, aim to provide support for children who have been exposed to domestic incidents. Designated Safeguarding Leads play a vital role in assessing the child’s needs and ensuring appropriate support.
